The One Good Thing About BushOn February 1, 2003, the President-select addressed the nation on the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy from the Cabinet Room of the White House at 2:04 P.M. EST. He said:
The cause in which they died will continue. Mankind is led into the darkness beyond our world by the inspiration of discovery and the longing to understand. Our journey into space will go on.See the full text of the speech at http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/02/20030201-2.htmlBy declaring his support for the space program the national agenda is set and the jackals who would attack NASA at its weakest and seek to weaken it further are effectively neutered. The space program is our best hope for the future and it should be strongly supported. This is the only statement or decision I've ever heard uttered by George Bush Junior that I thoughtfully and respectfully agree with. There is more on this topic under Rays of Hope.
Update 3.18.05 in response to Stuart Hameroff's opinion in an interview:

If you had that kind of budget at your disposal, what would you do with it?I completely agree that Bush has ulterior motives about this issue, just like he does for everything else that he papers over with lies and deceptions for the gullible (like his war on Iraq has something to do with terrorism, for example). We certainly haven't seen the funding pour forth yet that would be needed to put men back on the Moon, this could easily be another case of Bush using Happy Words to gain support even though he may have no intention of doing what he says he intends to do. Still I think any public support of NASA by the president whoever he may be is better than no support or negative support, even if NASA is sometimes its own worst enemy and in many ways the biggest obstacle to private space development.Stuart: Well, I'd save Social Security, boost healthcare, education and the environment. And I'd try and find a cure for arrogance. As far as science, the only reason Bush wants to put men on the moon and Mars is most likely military. He's worried the Chinese will get there first. I'd revamp the NIH, NSF and other funding agencies so researchers aren't herded into cubbyholes.
Update 8.20.05
No significant budget increase has been forthcoming for NASA so they are cannibalizing and discarding existing projects to be able to support the development of the Bush-mandated moon goal to keep up with the Chinese.
